SCAN. ARGUE. SPEND.

Point your camera at a meal and DEFICIT does the logging: the dish, the calories, the macros, and a list of every ingredient it counted. Fix anything it got wrong and log it in two taps. Fast enough that you are still doing it in month three.

The DEFICIT scanner on a real iPhone: a plate of pancakes with berries and bacon above the result sheet, read as pancakes with fruit and bacon at 865 kcal with a MEDIUM confidence read and the note: full meal, sits in the budget if you eat lighter later
01

SCAN THE PLATE

The camera reads the plate in seconds and shows how sure it is next to the number. This busy plate reads MEDIUM, because syrup and butter are easy for a photo to miss. DEFICIT says so, instead of guessing quietly.

The DEFICIT breakdown on a real iPhone: bacon, butter, strawberries, blueberries and raspberries itemised with weights, kcal and remove controls, a +62 kcal allowances row labelled not tied to one ingredient, and a tighter-read button offering to say or type each ingredient
02

ARGUE WITH IT

The estimate arrives itemised: the bacon, the butter, every berry, and a +62 allowance flagged as not tied to one ingredient. Strike any line and the total recalculates, or take the tighter read and say each ingredient yourself.

The DEFICIT home screen on a real iPhone: 1,232 kcal remaining against a 2,076 kcal measured maintenance, +146 kcal earned as 50% of 292 burned with the earned portion shown green in the budget bar, and a coach note reading half a day to go, body's calm, let the meals come when they're due
03

SPEND THE BUDGET

One number for the day, measured against your real maintenance. Movement is credited at half its watch value: this morning burned 292 and earned 146 back, leaving 1,232 to spend. The green slice of the bar is the part you earned.

YOUR BURN // MEASURED, NOT ASSUMED

IT LEARNS YOUR METABOLISM.

DEFICIT treats your burn as a prediction and checks it against the scale. Eating at a 2,181-kcal burn, this user's weight should have held. Four weigh-ins came in lighter than predicted, so the estimate climbed until the maths agreed: 2,501 a day, measured across fourteen logged days. The coach explains each correction in plain language, and your budget only moves when you approve the pin at a check-in.

  • Predicts your weight from your logs, then corrects when the scale disagrees
  • Reads the weight trend, not single weigh-ins, so one salty dinner cannot move your target
  • Credits watch movement at a 50% haircut, so an optimistic reading cannot inflate your day
The DEFICIT burn screen: your burn measured at 2,501 kcal a day, marked ADAPTIVE and +320 vs formula, with the convergence curve climbing off the 2,181 formula line and a pin history of each correction

A COACH THAT KNOWS YOUR NUMBERS.

Ask it what to eat tonight and it answers from your own fortnight: what you logged, how you slept, what your trend says you have room for. It flags the days that moved your weight and proposes the fix at your weekly check-in. Sleep, heart rate and steps come in from Apple Health.

The DEFICIT coach on a real iPhone answering, heading to the gym today, what should I eat before: a reply built from 4,434 steps, 40 percent recovery, a 144g protein target and 440 calories eaten so far, suggesting eggs on toast with baked beans because the user has logged it before

The DEFICIT trends tab, 30 of 30 days logged: weight at 80.0 kg and 2.9 kg down over 30 days, daily weigh-in dots scattered around a smoothed red trend line, captioned 740 kcal a day under maintenance is what got you there, above a burn card reading 2,121 kcal a day, adaptive

THE SLOPE UNDERNEATH

Daily weigh-ins bounce with water and salt. The dots are the bounce; the line is the slope: 2.9 kg down over 30 days, at 740 kcal a day under maintenance. Every number on this card is derived, and shown deriving.

STRAIGHT ANSWERS.

How accurate is the photo scan?

Good on a plated meal, weaker on a mixed bowl where the camera cannot see what is underneath. The difference from most scanners is that DEFICIT tells you which one you just got: every scan carries a confidence read, so a shaky guess arrives labelled as one. Photograph in decent light, fill the frame, and adjust the portion when it asks.

What if it gets a meal wrong?

Take it apart. The estimate arrives itemised, so you remove the ingredient it hallucinated, add the one it missed by voice, and the total re-computes as you go. Nothing is locked once logged.

Where does my calorie target come from?

On day one, a formula — the same starting point every tracker uses. From then on DEFICIT compares what you logged against what the scale actually did and rebuilds the target from that. It moves only when you confirm the change at your weekly check-in.

Do I have to log every single day?

No. The target is built from a fortnight of evidence, so a missed day is a gap in the data, and your streak carries one shield a week that absorbs it automatically. Nothing scolds you for a day off.

Does it work with Apple Health and my watch?

Yes. Steps, active energy, sleep, resting heart rate and HRV read in from Apple Health, and movement is credited back against your budget as you earn it. That is why the budget starts sedentary instead of asking you to rate your own activity.

How is this different from Cal AI or MyFitnessPal?

Three ways. Every DEFICIT estimate shows a confidence read at the moment of the scan, and arrives itemised so you can strike any ingredient and watch the total recalculate; most scanners show one confident number and a re-try button. Your calorie target is measured from your own logs and weigh-ins rather than fixed by a sign-up formula. And the subscription is the whole business model, so there are no ads at any tier.

How do I cancel?

Through the App Store, not through us: Settings → your name → Subscriptions → DEFICIT → Cancel. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription. The 3-day trial cancels the same way and charges nothing if you cancel inside it.

What happens to my data?

It syncs to your account so your phone, your widget and the web suite read the same figures. We do not sell it and we do not advertise against it.
